Entrepreneur offers luxury lifestyle for less

DUBAI is well known for the luxury lifestyle of its inhabitants – perhaps more so before the economic downturn struck – and now it is home to a new daily deals site that specialises in high-end goods and services.

Vipdeals.ae aims to attract customers in the UAE with a penchant for luxury and whose incomes exceed AED 20,000 (US$5,445) per month.

Here, cashy fires some questions at its 32-year-old Argentinean founder and managing director Alex Gorodokin (pictured, right), who moved here almost seven years ago...

Tell us more about Vipdeals...

We deal with high-end customers, providing deals for luxury shopping, leisure and travel, fine dining and entertainment at discounted prices through our upmarket shopping website.

Is very easy to use and shop. When you find something you’d like to purchase just click ‘buy now’ and then select the method of payment. We’ll charge your card and send you an email with your voucher containing all the information about the deal and how to redeem it.

We provide businesses with an opportunity to market their luxury products and services reaching a vast number of privileged customers without putting a huge dent in their marketing budget.

How did you get the idea for it?

I was inspired by a successful business model and adapted it to cater and target a specific market that wasn’t being looked after, bringing them more ideas and great customer service.

When did you set the company up?

Five months back. We launched the site a month and a half ago.

How did you finance it?

I had the funds to invest in it.

Is there entrepreneurial blood in your family?

Not really. Most of my family are either doctors or psychologists.

What did you do before you founded your company?

I worked in real estate.

Have you been affected by the economic downturn?

Our business is UAE-based and the current economic situation here isn’t bad at all.

How has your business grown so far?

We’ve experienced substantial growth so far and expect to triple our average monthly sales within four to six months.

What are your hopes for your business?

To have a well established brand name associated with luxury shopping, travel, leisure and top brands, to achieve our revenue targets and to have thousands of happy customers.

What’s your biggest achievement?

It’s still to come; what I’ve achieved so far were steps forward to what’s coming next.

What’s your biggest mistake?

Like anyone else, I’ve made a few, well loads. But I like to think ahead and not spend any time or energy worrying or thinking about things I can’t do anything about. That would make me less productive.

How have you ‘made it’?

Working hard, doing what I say I’ll do and making sure I am adding value to people I do business with. They have to benefit as well.

What’s your top tip for entrepreneurs?

Have clear goals and plans.
